Assetto Corsa EVO: More Content, More Questions

evo 99

The second major Early Access update is here, and with it comes a mix of excitement and frustration. On the one hand, we’re getting more content than originally promised. On the other, one of the most anticipated features—the free roam mode—has been delayed, and now its release date is no longer mentioned at all.

The original “Content Drop” model is gone. Instead, Kunos has restructured the entire roadmap. The result? We’ve gone from six announced content updates back in January to eight. While this revamped schedule promises a richer and more complete experience, it also reveals a more flexible (and perhaps less predictable) development approach.

Update 3 brings some real highlights: the legendary Spa-Francorchamps and Red Bull Ring circuits are coming to the simulator, along with nine new vehicles, an improved tire model, a more competitive AI, Phase 1 of multiplayer, and progress in virtual reality support. In short, a giant leap forward for sim racing purists.

The following updates won’t fall short either. Multiplayer Phase 2, SimGrid integration, single-player championships, career mode improvements, and eventually, modding tools are all on the way. Everything points to Assetto Corsa EVO becoming more than just a simulator—it aims to be a complete ecosystem.

However, the delay of the free roam mode, a key feature for players who enjoy exploration beyond traditional racing, leaves a bittersweet feeling. The eventual Version 1.0 promises a lot: 100 vehicles, 15 circuits, dynamic weather, in-game economy, driver avatar customization, dealerships and showrooms, car tuning and personalization, VR and triple-screen support, photo mode and replay gallery, and modding tools… a list that reads like a love letter to sim racing enthusiasts.

As a fan, I’m excited to see how this project evolves. But it also reminds me that with a simulator as ambitious as Assetto Corsa EVO, unexpected turns are part of the journey. Is it worth the wait? If the Kunos team maintains the quality and commitment they’ve shown so far, the answer is likely yes.

In the meantime, I adjust my gloves, calibrate the force feedback, and get ready for each new update. Because in sim racing—like in life—it’s not just about the finish line… it’s about enjoying every lap.
