Then the news dropped. The iRacing dev team has finally focused — after six intense months — on improving what needed it the most: tires and GT3 aerodynamics.
This isn’t a small change. We’re talking about a redesign that could completely reshape how GT3 is raced. No more being disproportionately punished for a slight slide. Tires now promise faster recovery, and a minor mistake won’t doom your grip for the entire stint.
More Risk, Less Fear?
This raises an interesting question: will we see more aggressive driving now that there’s less fear of losing everything over a small error? Or on the contrary, will greater confidence in the car reduce incidents, making racing cleaner and more exciting?
We don’t know yet. But one thing is clear — this new model will change the game. We’ll all have to relearn how to balance risk and opportunity. And to me, that’s what keeps the passion for racing alive: constant evolution.
The Cold Tire Trap
Of course, not everything is good news. Tires will now be even colder out of the pits, meaning the first laps will be a real challenge. According to the devs, the best lap times may not come until the fourth or fifth flying lap. For those of us battling through standard 8-minute qualifying sessions, this completely shifts strategy.
The first weeks of Season 3, 2025 are likely to be full of surprises — and maybe a few crashes — as we all adjust to the new rhythm.
Aerodynamics
But it’s not just about tires. Aerodynamics have also been revamped. Different chassis within the GT3 class are expected to behave more realistically in close racing situations, like sliding or racing in dirty air. This is fantastic news for those of us who enjoy the more technical side of sim racing.
That said, all custom setups will need to be rebuilt. And for those racing fixed setups, let’s hope the baseline configurations live up to the new standard.
Could this be the turning point we’ve all been waiting for? Only the stopwatch — and a few inevitable crashes in the first weeks — will tell.
