iRacing continues to expand the variety of vehicles available on its platform with the addition of two Caterham models that represent two very different stages of motorsport: the Caterham 420R, designed exclusively for competition, and the Caterham Academy, intended as an entry point for drivers beginning their racing careers.
The arrival of both vehicles is particularly interesting because it brings two philosophies historically associated with Caterham championships into the simulation. While the 420R focuses on high performance, low weight, and specifications developed specifically for racing, the Academy emphasizes learning vehicle control and making a gradual progression toward higher-level championships.
Caterham 420R: A Seven Built for Racing
The Caterham 420R is currently one of the most competition-focused offerings within the Seven family. Unlike versions primarily intended for road use, this model was developed specifically as a race car and serves as the official vehicle of the Seven Championship UK, one of the British manufacturer’s national racing championships.
Its presence is not limited to circuits in the United Kingdom. The 420R has raced at well-known venues such as Silverstone, Brands Hatch, and Donington Park, while also competing over the years at international circuits including Spa-Francorchamps, the Nürburgring, and even Bushy Park in Barbados.
The combination of an extremely lightweight chassis and a relatively powerful engine gives the 420R a particularly high power-to-weight ratio. The model uses a two-liter Ford Duratec engine capable of producing more than 210 horsepower, paired with a six-speed sequential gearbox.
At just 635 kilograms, or roughly 1,400 pounds, its power output takes on a very different meaning compared with a conventional automobile. The lack of excessive weight allows the Caterham to respond quickly to driver inputs, while throttle management, braking, and weight transfer have a considerable influence on the car’s behavior.
Caterham Academy: The Entry Point to Motorsport
The Caterham Academy represents a different philosophy. The series was established in 1995 and, over more than three decades, has become one of the best-known driver development programs in British motorsport.
Its primary goal is to provide drivers with little or no previous experience with a structured pathway into racing. Rather than simply putting a race car in the hands of a beginner, the program provides a guided experience that supports drivers throughout their introduction to motorsport.
Thousands of participants have gone through the Academy since its creation, making it an important part of Caterham’s strategy for developing new drivers.
One of the program’s most distinctive features is that participants keep the car at the end of the season. This allows them to use the same vehicle as a starting point for continuing their progression into higher-level championships within Caterham’s racing structure.
As a result, the Academy is not simply an isolated introductory season, but rather the first step in a potential racing career.
