iRacing: Force Feedback, Tire Modeling, and More

With the recent advancements led by the iRacing physics team, including experts like Dave and Terence, we’re seeing a new era of development that promises to make the experience even more lifelike.

From the upcoming V10 tire model to innovative tools like Car Builder and the Design of Experiments (DoE) tool, these changes mark a significant step forward for iRacing.

The iRacing team is dedicated to refining core physics systems, particularly in force feedback (FFB) and tire modeling.

  • Improved FFB is on the way with a calibration tool that allows users to experience more consistent feedback tuned to perfection.
  • On the tire modeling front, the new V10 tire model is especially exciting as iRacing’s first double-digit tire version, signaling a major evolution.

The V10 model will bring double-precision physics calculations, allowing for more accurate tire response. Additionally, a more advanced contact patch model divides the tire into “slices,” which better simulates how heat and wear affect each part of the tire.

This improved realism means that iRacers will feel more genuine tire grip, temperature buildup, and “moment” forces – the twisting forces that impact the steering wheel feel.

Car Builder and the Design of Experiments (DoE) Tool

Beyond physics, iRacing has equipped its Vehicle Dynamics Engineers (VD) with powerful new tools that streamline car and tire modeling. Car Builder, a visual development tool, lets engineers configure complex car components without needing to code each part manually.

This tool provides a library of customizable parts, making the development process faster, more consistent, and highly precise.

The Design of Experiments (DoE) Tool addresses tire development challenges, allowing engineers to optimize tires by testing tens of thousands of scenarios in seconds.

With over 40 independent parameters for each tire, this tool’s computational power means they can fine-tune tire characteristics quickly, resulting in more responsive, realistic tires.

The Impact on iRacers

All of these updates translate to a more immersive, dynamic racing experience for iRacers. Enhanced FFB, accurate tire models, and realistic vehicle dynamics mean improved control and feedback. iRacing’s ongoing and future developments are more than just updates; they’re the foundation of a richer, more realistic simulation that brings virtual racing closer to the real thing.
