Currently, iRacing’s pit system leaves much to be desired. After a crash, you tow into the pits and are given a repair time but no real insight into what’s being repaired or how severe the damage is. This lack of information can lead to drivers returning to the track with hidden damage, such as wheel misalignment, only to realize their car is barely drivable.
Without knowing what’s being repaired or the status of their car, drivers are forced to guess whether to return to the race or sit through additional repairs. This uncertainty can lead to poor decisions, further crashes, or even retiring from the race unnecessarily.
Why Detailed Repair Information is Important
Better Decision-Making
Knowing the specific repairs being performed would allow drivers to make smarter choices. For example, if the sim clearly indicated that your wheels or suspension were significantly damaged, you could decide to wait for full repairs instead of rushing back onto the track and risking further damage or another crash.
Preventing Further Crashes
The current lack of feedback increases the risk of drivers unknowingly returning to the track with unsafe cars.
For example, a car with permanent wheel damage may be extremely difficult to control, increasing the likelihood of another incident. A detailed repair system could prevent these situations by informing drivers about the condition of their critical components.
Proposed Solution: A Mechanic Feedback Feature
iRacing could introduce a mechanic feedback system that provides detailed, real-time updates on the repairs being performed. This feature could include:
- Specific details on repairs (e.g., wheels, suspension, engine).
- Clear indication of optional vs. mandatory repairs, allowing drivers to decide whether to skip certain fixes.
- Information on permanent damage that cannot be repaired during the race, helping drivers make better choices about continuing or retiring.
This feedback could be delivered through a visual interface or even a virtual mechanic voice, enhancing both strategy and immersion.
Dear iRacing, it’s time to give your drivers the control and insight they deserve in the pits.
