The first time you get into a GTP, something pretty funny tends to happen. You know you’re driving one of the fastest and most sophisticated machines in endurance racing, so mentally you expect to feel like a factory driver by turn two. Reality is usually a little less cinematic. You brake too late, the car complains, you try to correct it, oversteer appears out of nowhere, and a few seconds later you discover that even a car packed with cutting-edge technology is still perfectly capable of humiliating you in front of a runoff area.

Learning how to drive a GTP does not begin with finding the perfect setup. It begins with understanding what the hell the car is trying to tell you.

That becomes even more important if you are preparing for something like the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In a race like that, chasing a setup that gives you two extra tenths on one perfect lap may matter far less than finding a car you can drive for hours without feeling like every braking zone is a diplomatic negotiation. The Porsche GTP gives you plenty of parameters to adjust from the cockpit, but that does not mean you need to be constantly changing them. The key is understanding what each adjustment does, when it is worth touching, and most importantly, when the problem is not the setup but the person holding the steering wheel.

Before Touching Anything, Actually Learn to Drive the Car

When a car feels difficult, our natural reaction is often to blame the setup. If it does not turn, we think about anti-roll bars. If it moves around under braking, we adjust brake bias. If it struggles for traction, we change the traction control. The problem starts when we alter three or four parameters in a row without really understanding what caused the original behavior. Ten minutes later the car is still difficult, except now we have also lost any idea of which change caused what.

That is why, during your first sessions in a GTP, laps are far more valuable than clicks in the setup menu. If you are still finding entire seconds simply by improving braking references, learning how to release the brake pedal, or understanding when you can get back on the throttle, a setup change is unlikely to transform your performance. A driver who still has five or ten seconds to find through driving technique will gain far more by learning the car than by chasing tiny mechanical improvements. The tenths come later, once your driving is consistent enough for you to recognize what the car itself is actually doing.

That does not mean ignoring the setup entirely. It means using it when you have a repeatable problem. If the car understeers in the same phase of the same kind of corner, if the front tires consistently lock under heavy braking, or if the rear becomes nervous every time you release the brake, then you finally have useful information. A good setup change begins with a specific question, not with copying numbers simply because somebody else happens to be quick with them.

Anti-Roll Bars Can Completely Change the Character of a GTP

Anti-roll bars, usually referred to as ARBs, are among the most useful tools for changing the balance of the car during a race. In simple terms, altering the relative stiffness between the front and rear axle changes how willing the car is to rotate and how it behaves under lateral load. Softening or stiffening an ARB can noticeably change the feel of the car, particularly in corners where you need precision on turn-in or stability as you begin to apply throttle.

There is one trap worth avoiding, though, and it appears constantly in setup advice: treating one specific value as if it were a universal truth. ARBs do not work in isolation. Their effect is connected to suspension settings, differential behavior, ride height, aerodynamics, tires, and even driving style. Two drivers can use noticeably different configurations and still produce similar lap times because each one needs the car to respond in a particular way.

In the Porsche GTP, it is fairly common to find drivers who prefer a relatively soft front bar to make the front end more willing to rotate, while others prioritize stability and are happy to accept a little more understeer. The important question is not which philosophy is objectively correct. It is which one lets you repeat fast laps without fighting the steering wheel.

In endurance racing, a slightly less aggressive but predictable car can be much faster over an entire stint.

Cold Tires Change Everything

If there is one moment when a GTP can make you question your life choices, it is during the opening laps on cold tires. A car that feels precise and planted twenty minutes later can initially feel nervous, reluctant to turn, and surprisingly enthusiastic about stepping sideways when you least need it. That change in behavior forces you to adapt your driving and, in some cases, the settings available from the cockpit.

Some drivers use a slightly more conservative anti-roll bar configuration during the opening laps and change it once the tires reach their operating window. That can work, but there is no need to turn every lap into an engineering exercise. If you are still learning the car, trying to change the ARB for different corner types while also managing traffic, braking references, and tire temperatures can create more mental workload than the adjustment is worth.

The best setup is not necessarily the one that gives you the most options. It is the one you can still use properly after an hour behind the wheel.

That matters even more at Le Mans. Over the course of a 24-hour race, you can experience changing temperatures, different track conditions, fresh tires, worn tires, and moments when your concentration simply is not as sharp as it was earlier. A car that feels perfect on a qualifying lap can become exhausting over a long stint. That is why it is worth practicing when conditions are less than ideal, because that is when you discover whether you truly know the GTP or whether you only know its best version.

Brake Bias Will Probably Become Your Best Friend

Of all the parameters you can change from the steering wheel, brake bias is one of the most important to understand first. It determines how braking effort is distributed between the front and rear axles. Moving the bias forward usually gives the car more stability, while moving it progressively rearward can help you use more of the rear axle’s braking capacity and encourage the car to rotate on corner entry.

There is an important misconception here. Moving brake bias forward can make the car feel very secure under heavy braking, but that does not automatically mean you are stopping in the shortest possible distance. If too much work is being demanded from the front axle, the front tires may become overloaded before you are fully using the rear tires.

The goal is usually to find a bias that is far enough rearward to use all four tires effectively, but not so far rearward that the car becomes unpredictable.

The Porsche also gives you useful visual information that can help you see which axle is getting close to locking. If the front tires are consistently the first to struggle, it can make sense to move the bias slightly rearward. If the opposite happens and the rear tires start locking first, moving the bias forward can restore stability. The important thing is to make small changes and observe what happens over several braking zones, because adjusting the value after one single corner can lead you into chasing sensations that were actually caused by a driving mistake.

There Is No Magic Brake Bias Number

It is tempting to search for one exact value and treat it as the answer. You will find drivers using numbers around 44 percent, others slightly higher, and others significantly different depending on the setup. The problem is that those numbers do not exist in a vacuum. Master cylinder sizing, braking configuration, and other setup choices can completely change the way the same percentage behaves.

So copying 44.25 percent because a fast driver uses it may be a useful reference, but it should never become a religion. With your setup, your hardware, and your braking style, that exact number might feel fantastic or it might turn Arnage into some kind of lottery.

What matters is not using another driver’s brake bias. What matters is understanding why that driver ended up using that value.

The ideal bias can also change over the course of a stint. As the tires wear, grip drops and the balance between the two axles changes with it. Small corrections during a long run are perfectly normal, especially when the car no longer behaves under braking the way it did on the opening laps. In endurance racing, you are not driving exactly the same car for an hour. You are driving a car that is constantly evolving underneath you.

Brake Bias Migration Sounds Complicated Until You Understand What It Does

Brake bias migration is one of those parameters that initially looks as though it exists purely to give your steering wheel more buttons. Once you understand its purpose, however, it starts to make a lot more sense. It allows the brake balance to change depending on how much pressure you are applying to the pedal, which means the car can behave one way during the initial high-pressure braking phase and slightly differently as you release pressure approaching the apex.

That gives you a lot of control over stability and rotation. You can aim for a more secure car while applying maximum braking force and then allow the balance to evolve as pedal pressure decreases, helping the car rotate as you enter the corner. Some drivers are comfortable with moderately negative values, somewhere around -3 or -5, but those numbers should be treated as examples rather than universal recipes.

Brake bias migration works when it suits the way you brake, not when it simply copies somebody else’s setup.

This kind of adjustment becomes much more useful once your own inputs are consistent. If you are applying the brake completely differently from lap to lap, it is difficult to judge what migration is actually doing because you are constantly changing the main input yourself. Once your braking technique becomes stable, you begin to feel how the car changes as you release pressure, and that is when the setting stops feeling mysterious and starts becoming genuinely useful.

Traction Control Should Not Be Driving the Car for You

The GTP’s traction control system lets you work with both the amount of slip allowed and the strength of the intervention once the system decides to step in. In practical terms, you are deciding how much wheelspin the car can tolerate before intervening and how aggressively it cuts power when it does. Finding the right balance matters because too much traction control can kill acceleration, while too little can turn every slow corner exit into an unnecessary argument with the rear tires.

A sensible general philosophy is to use the lowest level of intervention you can manage consistently. That does not mean turning everything off and relying on spiritual strength. It means gradually reducing assistance as you become more precise with the throttle. Some drivers use slightly more conservative settings on the opening laps, allow more slip once the tires are properly warm, and then return to a more protective setting later in the stint as tire wear begins to increase.

There is also an interesting endurance-racing detail here. Traction control can intervene over bumps, curbs, or sections where a wheel briefly becomes unloaded even when you are not experiencing a serious traction problem. Every intervention cuts some power and, while the effect may be tiny in isolation, repeated hundreds of times it can have a small impact on fuel consumption. In a short race you probably never think about it. In a 24-hour event, where one extra lap of fuel can save you from a final splash, tiny inefficiencies eventually become strategy.

A Stable Setup Can Be Worth More Than a Spectacular One

There is a tendency to obsess over extremely fast setups because we automatically associate a more aggressive car with a better car. But a qualifying lap and an endurance stint are two completely different problems. A setup that produces one incredible lap can become exhausting when you have to repeat that same behavior for forty minutes, an hour, or even longer.

For a race like Le Mans, I would ask myself one very simple question: could I drive this car for two hours without being afraid of it? If the answer is no, you probably do not yet have the right setup for a race of that length. You might need to accept a little more understeer, run slightly more conservative traction control, or sacrifice a couple of tenths in certain areas in exchange for a car that is easier to trust.

Because the mathematics of endurance racing are brutally simple. Gaining one tenth per lap for twenty laps sounds fantastic until you lose four minutes in the pits repairing the car because you tried to extract that performance at a moment when you did not need to. Pure pace matters, of course, but useful performance is the combination of speed, consistency, and keeping the car in one piece.

Full Stints Teach You Things Hotlapping Never Will

One perfect lap can give you a false sense of mastery. You see a good time on the screen, get close to a reference that previously looked impossible, and start thinking you have the car figured out. Then you run a full stint and discover that lap 18 is a very different experience from lap two. The tires have changed, the fuel load is lower, traffic appears, and your concentration starts to fade.

That is why, if you are preparing for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a significant part of your practice should involve complete race-condition stints. Stop chasing your personal best on every lap. Try to maintain consistent times while managing tires, traffic, and fuel. Learn how the car changes as the initial grip disappears and pay attention to the mistakes you begin making after thirty or forty minutes of concentration.

Shorter endurance races can be excellent preparation because they force you to deal with exactly these situations. Pit entry and pit exit practice should also be part of the routine, even though it lacks the glamour of attacking the Porsche Curves at full commitment. A poor pit entry can cost you several seconds, a penalty, or even repairs. Five minutes spent practicing pit entry can easily be worth more than fifty laps spent chasing one tenth.

In Multiclass Racing, Having the Fastest Car Does Not Make You the Owner of the Track

GTPs are incredibly fast, and that performance difference can create a dangerous mindset when you catch slower-class traffic. Because you arrive so much faster, it is easy to feel that the other car should simply disappear from your path. Multiclass racing does not work that way. The faster car has to learn how to manage traffic just as much as the slower car has to learn how to remain predictable.

One of the most important skills is to stop thinking only about passing and start thinking about where you want the pass to be completed. There are situations where forcing the move immediately will actually cost more time because you compromise the entry, get trapped on a bad line, and ruin the exit. Waiting half a second and using the GTP’s acceleration after the apex can be both faster and dramatically safer.

This matters even more at Le Mans, where the speed difference between classes can be enormous. Learning to read traffic several corners ahead becomes part of race pace just as much as knowing where to brake. The fastest driver is not necessarily the one who takes the first gap available. Very often, it is the one who understands which gaps are worth taking and which ones are better left alone.

Survival Is Part of Performance

A 24-hour race is rarely lost because someone chose to drive two tenths slower for one stint. It is far more easily lost through contact, spins, penalties, and accumulated mistakes. That reality may not sound particularly exciting when you have just bought a GTP and want to discover everything the car can do, but it is one of the first lessons worth accepting.

During the opening hours, you do not need to prove anything. You do not need to win every battle with traffic or set a personal best on every lap. You need to keep the car inside a performance window that you can repeat for a very long time.

Using 90 or 95 percent of the car’s potential for hundreds of laps is usually far more valuable than reaching 100 percent for five minutes.

That does not mean driving scared. It means building margin where it makes sense. As you gain experience with the car, that margin naturally becomes smaller because you understand more clearly what the GTP can do and what warning signs appear before something goes wrong. Real speed arrives when you stop feeling as though you are driving fast and simply feel as though you have everything under control.

The Real Setup Starts Between the Steering Wheel and the Seat

You can have a professional setup, study telemetry, and understand exactly what every parameter does, but you still need the least glamorous part of the process: mileage. A lot of mileage. Muscle memory and experience completely change your relationship with a car this fast because they free up mental capacity for things you simply cannot think about in the beginning.

Your first laps require almost all of your attention just to brake and turn properly. Then you begin to understand weight transfer and trail braking. Later, you can manage traffic without losing your rhythm. Eventually, you can feel the tires changing, make a small brake bias adjustment, and think about the next overtake while still driving close to your target pace. That progression cannot be bought from a setup shop.

That is why it is so important not to confuse the setup with the solution. A good setup makes the job easier, but it does not replace experience. If somebody who understands the car can gain several seconds using exactly the same configuration you are running, it is probably not yet time to search for tenths in the setup. First, you need to find all the time that is still hidden in your driving.

Preparing for Le Mans Means Learning How to Drive Imperfect Laps

This may be the hardest part to accept. In a long race, you will almost never have a completely clean lap. There will be traffic, flags, other people’s mistakes, worn tires, changing temperatures, and moments when you are simply not as focused as you were an hour earlier. If all your practice has been built around chasing perfect laps, every disruption can destroy your rhythm.

That is why you also need to practice ugly laps. Learn how to deal with awkward overtakes, sacrifice one corner to improve the next one, and accept losing a few tenths without immediately trying to win them back. The ability to accept a small time loss is one of the most valuable traits an endurance driver can develop.

Trying to recover every lost half-second at the next braking zone is an excellent way to lose several minutes instead.

It is also worth learning how you respond mentally after making a mistake. Every driver will make mistakes during a 24-hour race. The difference is whether that mistake ends there or creates another three because you are still thinking about it. The ability to return quickly to a normal rhythm is part of endurance training just as much as knowing the exact braking point into Mulsanne.

The Day You Understand the GTP Is the Day You Stop Touching Buttons for No Reason

At first, all those steering-wheel parameters seem to promise an instant solution. Brake bias, migration, anti-roll bars, traction control, and different maps all look like tools that can fix almost anything. With experience, you realize that they are exactly that: tools. They are not magic tricks, and they do not replace good driving technique.

Over time, you will learn to recognize when a nervous rear end on cold tires might benefit from a small adjustment, when brake bias should evolve during the stint, or when traction control needs to change as conditions move around. But you will also learn something even more useful: very often, you do not need to change anything at all. Sometimes the car simply needs you to adapt the way you are driving it.

That is probably the point where you truly begin to master a GTP. Not when you can recite every setup value from memory, but when you can explain what the car is doing, why it is happening, and which adjustment could actually help. Until then, the formula remains surprisingly simple: drive, complete full stints, observe, change one thing, and drive again.

Because the 24 Hours of Le Mans are not won by finding four secret numbers hidden inside a setup menu. They are built lap by lap, braking zone by braking zone, decision by decision.

The setup can help make the car faster, but first you need to make sure the driver can use that performance for 24 hours.
