Standing starts can be one of the most challenging aspects of sim racing, especially in a realistic simulator like iRacing. In many real-world racing series, drivers have the benefit of a formation lap, which allows them to warm up their tires and brakes, ensuring they are in optimal condition for the start of the race.
“This formation lap not only prepares the car mechanically but also helps drivers mentally prepare for the intense moments that follow when the lights go out.”
However, in iRacing, the experience is a bit different. The simulator skips the formation lap, allowing racers to jump straight into the action. While this approach can be more exciting and less time-consuming, it introduces unique challenges.
Cold tires and brakes are the most significant issues, as they can drastically affect the car’s performance and handling during the crucial first moments of the race.
The lack of pre-race procedures means that drivers must adapt quickly and develop techniques to manage their vehicles effectively from a standstill.
The absence of a formation lap in iRacing means drivers start the race with cold tires and brakes, which can be particularly challenging. Cold tires provide less grip, increasing the risk of wheel spin and loss of control. Cold brakes are less efficient, affecting stopping power and making it harder to modulate braking force.
Challenges Faced by Drivers:
To address these challenges, iRacing is working on an innovative project to provide pre-conditioned tires and brakes at the start of races. This feature aims to simulate the benefits of a formation lap without actually implementing one.
While it’s an exciting development, its release is slated for Season 3, with the possibility of delays.
Until then, mastering the current standing start procedure is essential for any serious iRacing competitor.
