There is a point at which many iRacing drivers discover that open-setup racing involves more than learning a car and circuit. You practise, improve your braking points and find a few tenths, until someone eventually asks a simple question: “What setup are you running?” That question opens the door to a separate market built around setups, telemetry, coaching, data analysis and monthly subscriptions.
What started as drivers exchanging configuration files has developed into a specialised business. Companies now prepare setups for specific cars, tracks and race weeks, often combining them with reference laps, telemetry and technical support. The setup remains important, but the commercial product has increasingly become the preparation work surrounding it rather than the file alone.
From sharing setups to selling subscriptions
A setup is ultimately a collection of parameters covering tyre pressures, ride heights, springs, dampers, anti-roll bars, alignment, differential settings and brake bias. The resulting file is tiny, but producing a competitive configuration can require hours of testing, telemetry analysis and adjustment, particularly when the goal is to make the car work across an entire race stint rather than a single qualifying lap.
That development time is what setup businesses learned to sell. Instead of spending an evening testing spring rates or comparing differential settings, a customer can download a configuration prepared for that week’s combination and begin practising immediately. What once circulated informally between teammates and friends gradually became a recurring service covering multiple championships, cars and tracks.
The subscription model followed naturally because iRacing itself operates around weekly race schedules. A setup provider can prepare new material for each combination, while customers receive a predictable stream of configurations throughout a season. That turns what might otherwise be an occasional purchase into a recurring relationship between the driver and the setup provider.
Setup shops are selling preparation time

The appeal becomes easier to understand when looking at how many people actually use iRacing. A driver with two hours available after work may prefer to spend that time learning the circuit and racing rather than testing suspension changes. Paying for a prepared setup effectively outsources part of the engineering work and leaves more of the available session for driving.
There is no useful universal figure for how much lap time a paid setup is worth. The difference depends on the car, track, weather, baseline configuration and the driver’s own ability. In some combinations, the effect may be small. In others, particularly at higher competitive levels, small improvements in balance or tyre management can matter because the gaps between drivers are already measured in tenths or hundredths.
That makes saved preparation time one of the clearest ways to understand the market. Customers are not necessarily paying because they are incapable of building a setup themselves. Many are paying because they would rather have somebody else perform the testing and arrive with a configuration that is already close to competitive.
The setup file is only part of the subscription
The business becomes more interesting once the setup itself stops being the only thing included. Many services now combine configuration files with reference laps, telemetry, onboard videos, setup notes, coaching and direct access to experienced drivers or engineers. In those cases, the customer is buying a package designed to shorten the process of understanding both the car and the circuit.
This also makes the service harder to copy. A setup file can be shared easily, but the development process, explanations, customer support and reputation of the people producing it are more difficult to reproduce. A company that consistently provides useful telemetry and responds to technical questions can retain customers even when competing setups produce similar lap times.
The result is a market that increasingly overlaps with performance analysis rather than simple file distribution. iRacing itself supports detailed telemetry analysis through tools such as Cosworth Pi Toolbox, while third-party services use similar data to explain where customers are losing time and how the car should be driven. The setup becomes one component of a wider driver-development service.
What happens when setup companies study each other?

Once several businesses compete for the same subscribers, another question appears: what can one setup provider legitimately learn from another? In most industries, buying a competitor’s product and studying it is normal commercial behaviour. Manufacturers routinely examine rival products to understand design decisions, pricing and performance.
Digital setup files make the comparison less straightforward because the product is information rather than a physical object. A configuration can be purchased, opened, compared and reproduced without removing anything from the original seller. That makes questions around contractual restrictions, redistribution and commercial use more important than the simple fact that a competitor obtained access to the product.
The relevant distinctions matter. Purchasing a setup is not necessarily the same as redistributing it. Studying another configuration is not automatically the same as copying it, and modifying a setup before selling a different product introduces another layer of complexity. If access was obtained under false information or in breach of contractual terms, that creates a separate issue again.
A lawsuit has brought the setup market into focus
A recent lawsuit involving businesses in the iRacing setup market has brought these questions into public discussion. According to allegations made in the case, a competitor obtained access to another provider’s products while using a different identity and then used information from that access improperly. Those claims remain allegations rather than established findings, and any legal conclusion will depend on the evidence, contractual terms and arguments presented in the case.
That distinction is important because the dispute should not be reduced to whether one business looked at another company’s setup. The more relevant questions concern what the purchaser agreed to, whether access restrictions existed, what information was obtained and whether any protected material was subsequently copied or redistributed commercially.
Regardless of the outcome, the dispute illustrates how far the market has moved from casual file sharing. There is now enough money attached to virtual car preparation for businesses to care about customer access, commercial information and the limits of competitive benchmarking. That would have sounded unusual during the early years of consumer sim racing, but it is increasingly consistent with the professional economy surrounding modern esports and online competition.
Sim racing now supports real businesses
For most people, iRacing remains a hobby. Drivers subscribe because they enjoy racing, join leagues with friends and may never spend anything beyond membership and content. Around that core audience, however, a professional layer has developed involving esports teams, coaches, engineers, broadcasters, hardware companies and services dedicated to improving virtual performance.
Setup providers fit naturally into that environment because open-setup racing deliberately allows competitors to alter the car. iRacing’s own documentation explains how setup adjustments influence vehicle behaviour, and teams at the highest levels already treat preparation as part of the competitive process. Commercial services simply make some of that work available to customers who do not have their own engineer or team.
That does not make every setup subscription essential, nor does it mean every driver benefits equally from one. It does show that technical preparation has become a product that can be bought, just as coaching, telemetry analysis and hardware configuration can be purchased elsewhere in the sim racing market.
Are paid setups pay-to-win?

The growth of this market inevitably leads to accusations of pay-to-win. A driver using a professionally developed configuration, telemetry and technical support may appear to have an advantage over somebody running the default setup supplied with the simulator. The comparison becomes especially sensitive in competitive open-setup series where relatively small differences can influence tyre behaviour or confidence at the limit.
Calling the entire system pay-to-win is still too simplistic. A fast setup does not teach somebody how to brake consistently, manage traffic or make good decisions during a race. A slower driver cannot buy a subscription and expect to beat significantly stronger opponents simply because the car has been configured by somebody else.
At the same time, pretending setup quality has no effect would make little sense in a category specifically designed to allow setup changes. The more useful question is whether drivers are comfortable with part of the preparation process being outsourced commercially, and whether access to better technical resources changes how they view competition in open-setup racing.
Free sharing has not disappeared
Sim racing has a long history of drivers sharing configurations through forums, leagues, Discord servers and private teams. That culture still exists, and plenty of competitive setups remain available without a subscription. Commercial providers did not replace free sharing so much as create another option alongside it.
Their advantage is consistency. A free setup may appear occasionally for a popular combination, while a subscription service can promise new material every race week across several championships. Customers are therefore paying for regularity as much as outright performance, particularly when the package includes updates if tyre models, weather conditions or Balance of Performance values change.
For buyers, the more useful question is not simply whether a setup should cost money. It is what the subscription actually provides beyond the file. A service offering only a downloadable configuration competes directly with free alternatives, while one that includes telemetry, explanations, coaching and support is selling something broader.
Data and knowledge are harder to copy than setup values
Consider two services producing almost identical car configurations. One gives the customer a file and nothing else. The other includes the same basic setup alongside a reference lap, telemetry traces, onboard footage, long-run recommendations and access to somebody who can explain how the car should be driven.
The configurations may perform similarly, but commercially the products are different. The second company is selling knowledge and support in addition to setup development, giving customers something that cannot be reproduced simply by forwarding a file to another driver.
That may also explain where the strongest setup businesses are heading. Telemetry interpretation, coaching, reputation and customer support provide more defensible value than a list of suspension and differential settings. They also create a stronger reason for somebody to keep paying every month instead of subscribing once and leaving with a folder full of setups.
Could iRacing bring more of this market inside the simulator?

Much of the setup economy currently exists outside iRacing. Drivers move between the simulator, setup websites, telemetry software, Discord communities and separate payment platforms to assemble everything they need. That fragmented process leaves room for a more integrated approach, although iRacing has not announced such a system.
A community garage could theoretically allow creators to distribute free or paid setups from within the service while giving drivers more information about what they are downloading. Usage data, ratings, intended iRating ranges or information about the creator could make the market more transparent without preventing teams and individuals from continuing to share their work for free.
Such a marketplace remains an editorial idea rather than an announced iRacing feature, but the external setup economy shows that the demand already exists. Drivers are willing to pay for organised preparation, and creators are willing to build businesses around providing it.
The setup business is really selling preparation
Paid setup services make more sense once the file itself is separated from the work required to create and support it. The configuration may occupy only a few kilobytes, but producing it can involve repeated testing, telemetry analysis and specialist knowledge. Customers who value their available practice time may decide that paying someone else to perform that work is worthwhile.
The most developed services have already moved beyond simply delivering setup files. They sell reference data, coaching, technical support and access to people who understand how to extract performance from a particular car. The recent commercial disputes surrounding the industry show what happens when that work acquires enough value for companies to start protecting access to it.
The setup created the market, but preparation is increasingly what the customer is buying.
