iRacing: How to Save Money on Cars and Tracks in 2026

iRacing 2026 Season 4 is now underway, bringing new cars, rebuilt circuits and more official series to an already enormous content library. That variety is one of iRacing’s strengths, but it can also make the service expensive if you start buying cars and tracks without a plan. The good news is that the current base package, participation credits, volume discounts and careful season planning can significantly reduce how much you actually need to spend.

Season 4 officially began on September 15, 2026. The latest build introduced the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR-LMH, Caterham Academy and 420R, Gen 4 Grand National and rebuilt versions of Road America, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and The Milwaukee Mile, among many other changes.

The key to saving money remains the same: do not buy content simply because you need it for one race this week. Decide what you actually want to race, study the complete schedule and prioritize cars and tracks that can be reused across several championships.

Maximize the Content Included With Your Membership

An active iRacing membership currently includes 32 cars and 29 tracks. All of the cars required for official Rookie racing are included in the base package, so there is no need to start buying content immediately.

This is particularly important for new drivers. Racing the included content for several weeks gives you time to understand whether you actually prefer Sports Cars, Formula Cars, Oval, Dirt Oval or Dirt Road before spending money on a progression path you may later abandon.

For Sports Car drivers, the included selection is now particularly strong:

• Global Mazda MX-5 Cup: still one of the best starting points in iRacing. Season 4 introduced a significant overhaul covering its suspension, steering, drivetrain, aero, damping, power curve and new dry and wet tires.
• Toyota GR86: another included rear-wheel-drive sports car that provides an excellent step into faster multiclass and one-make racing.
• BMW M2 Racing (G87): added to the base content package for every iRacing member in Season 3 2026. It replaced the older BMW M2 CS Racing as the main current-generation M2 used in official competition.

Formula racers also have useful included options such as the Formula Vee and Ray FF1600, making it possible to spend a considerable amount of time learning open-wheel racing without purchasing another car.

Rule number one: use the included content until you know which type of racing you actually want to pursue.

The Rookie licence is not something that needs to be escaped as quickly as possible. Building racecraft, accident avoidance and consistency with included content can save money while also making the transition into faster cars considerably easier.

Plan the Entire Season Before Buying Anything

Once you decide to move into paid content, start by looking at the entire 12-week schedule rather than the current week.

A circuit that appears in several championships can provide much better value than one used by only the series you are currently racing. Tracks such as Spa, Watkins Glen, Road America, Sebring, Road Atlanta or Daytona frequently appear across multiple categories and can therefore become useful long-term purchases, although the exact schedule changes every season.

The same logic applies to cars. Before purchasing one, check whether it appears in multiple series, endurance events or special events you actually intend to enter.

Do Not Buy Setups Before You Actually Need Them

Another expense that can quickly appear after leaving Fixed racing is the setup subscription.

You do not necessarily need one.

• iRacing provides its own setups for many cars, ranging from baseline and fixed configurations to wet, qualifying, endurance, aerodynamic and track-specific setups depending on the vehicle. Services such as Garage61 and Majors Garage can also provide useful free alternatives.

A professional setup service can eventually become worthwhile for competitive Open racing or serious endurance preparation. For a new driver, however, improving braking consistency, racing lines and car control will usually produce a much larger improvement than paying for an esports setup.

Use the Race Participation Credit Program Carefully

iRacing continues to operate its Race Participation Credit Program, allowing members to earn up to $10 in iRacing Credit per season, or $40 per year.

For a normal 12-week series, you need to participate in eight different race weeks in the same eligible official series.

Participation is more than simply registering for a race. You must score championship points and complete at least 50% of the number of laps completed by the class winner.

The current payouts are:

• Rookie, D and C Class official series: $4 iRacing Credit.
• B and A Class official series: $7 iRacing Credit.
• Maximum: $10 total credit per season.

Credits earned through the program are automatically calculated during the following season release week. iRacing Credits also now expire 24 months after they are granted.

The official rules are available through the iRacing Race Participation Credit Program.

Do not buy several tracks purely to earn a $4 or $7 participation credit. The program is most valuable when you were already planning to race most of that championship.

For example, buying two $14.95 tracks purely to complete an additional series for a $4 credit clearly does not save money. Treat the participation bonus as a reward for racing content you wanted anyway.

Take Advantage of iRacing Volume Discounts

iRacing’s content discounts remain one of the easiest ways to reduce costs when you have several planned purchases.

The current structure is:

• 3 to 5 eligible cars or tracks in one purchase: 10% discount.
• 6 or more eligible cars or tracks in one purchase: 15% discount.
• Own 40 pieces of eligible paid content: permanent 20% discount on future eligible purchases.
• Own all eligible full-priced cars and tracks: 30% discount on future eligible content while you continue to meet the requirement.

These volume discounts apply to regular-priced eligible content. Permanently discounted items costing $5 or less, including many Legacy products and Tech Tracks, do not count toward the program.

There is an important caveat to the popular advice of always buying six items.

Do not add a car or track you do not want simply to reach the 15% discount. You are still spending additional money. The six-item strategy works best when you already have six pieces of content on your future shopping list and can wait to purchase them together.

Building a wishlist at the beginning of the season and buying in groups is usually more efficient than making an individual purchase every Tuesday.

Remember That the Subscription Price Also Matters

Cars and tracks are not the only cost involved.

iRacing increased its standard direct subscription pricing on August 18, 2026. The regular direct-account rates are now:

Longer subscriptions reduce the effective monthly cost compared with continuously paying month by month.

iRacing also periodically runs membership promotions. Existing members planning to stay with the service long-term should compare renewal offers when they appear, as renewing early adds the additional subscription period to the end of the current membership rather than replacing unused time.

New-member promotions can be different from renewal offers, so always check the actual price shown before purchasing.

Plan Around iRacing Special Events

Major events are another reason to think several months ahead.

iRacing runs a substantial calendar of endurance and special races based on major real-world motorsport events. These can require combinations of cars and tracks that may not appear in your normal weekly championship.

As of September 20, the next major events include Petit Le Mans on September 25-27 and the Bathurst 1000 on October 2-4, with further endurance and special events continuing throughout the end of 2026.

Unlike professional esports championships, normal iRacing Special Events should not be viewed primarily as cash-prize competitions. Their attraction is the longer format, larger grids, team racing and prestige associated with completing events modeled on some of motorsport’s biggest races.

If one of these races is a priority for you, check the required car and circuit well in advance. That lets you combine the purchase with other useful content and gives you enough time to practise rather than buying everything immediately before race weekend.

A Simple iRacing Buying Strategy for 2026

For most new or intermediate members, the most economical progression is straightforward.

• Start with the included cars and tracks. There are currently 32 cars and 29 tracks in the membership package.
• Choose one main discipline before buying several unrelated cars.
• Check all 12 weeks of the current schedule and prioritize tracks you can reuse.
• Compare several series to find overlapping track purchases.
• Use free setups first before paying for a setup subscription.
• Use participation credits as a bonus, not a reason to purchase content you otherwise would not use.
• Group planned purchases to use the 10% or 15% volume discounts.
• Plan Special Events early so their required content is part of your normal purchasing strategy.
• Watch membership renewal promotions if you know you intend to remain on iRacing long-term.

The biggest mistake is trying to own everything immediately. iRacing is designed around a long-term content library, and there is little benefit in buying ten different cars if you only have enough practice time to race one or two of them properly.

Using the included content, studying the Season 4 calendar and building purchases around tracks and cars you will repeatedly use can substantially reduce the real cost of the service without limiting the quality of racing available to you.
