iRacing: The Most Notable Weather System Changes in 2024 Season 4

One of the most significant advancements is the introduction of a new weather type called “Spotty Rain,” available exclusively in the Timeline Weather mode. This weather feature simulates scattered showers in a highly realistic manner, creating a scenario where the intensity and duration of rainfall vary significantly across different sections of the track.

Spotty Rain doesn’t simply produce constant rain. Instead, it generates a mix of light and heavy downpours, interspersed with clear skies and sunshine, leading to unpredictable track conditions.

In addition to this new weather type, several technical issues have been addressed, particularly those affecting the interaction between rain and barometric pressure. Prior to this update, a discrepancy under certain conditions prevented rain from appearing in the simulation, even when it had been selected in the settings.

The improvements not only impact how rain behaves on the track but also the timing of its appearance. In previous versions, the start and stop times for rainfall were predictable, as they always occurred at exact minute intervals. While this may seem like a minor detail, it affected the immersion, as it didn’t reflect the natural unpredictability of real-world rain.

This update resolves that limitation, allowing rainfall to begin and end more fluidly and naturally, adding greater realism to the weather conditions.

Moreover, cloud behavior has been adjusted to more accurately reflect transitions between clear and overcast moments, enhancing the authenticity of the atmospheric conditions and deepening player immersion.

Several visual effects related to rain on the track have also been corrected. For instance, during nighttime races, fog and rain on the windshields would sometimes appear or disappear abruptly, causing confusion for drivers.

Additionally, the effect of water splashing on the windshield from the driver’s own vehicle has been removed, as it previously detracted from the simulation’s realism.

Finally, the update has improved the playback of rainy sessions. In some cases, the track appeared dry at the start of a replay, even though it had been raining during the actual race. This has now been corrected to ensure greater consistency in weather effects during replays.
