Polyphony Digital Hiring for Gran Turismo Simulation and AI

Polyphony Digital continues to recruit developers for the Gran Turismo series, with positions covering vehicle simulation, artificial intelligence, graphics, online racing and game-engine development. The studio’s official recruitment listings reveal an emphasis on improving driving physics, reproducing complex vehicle systems and developing more realistic AI opponents. While these roles could contribute to the next Gran Turismo game, Sony has not officially announced Gran Turismo 8 or confirmed which projects the new employees will work on.

The developer’s recruitment portal, lists 15 job categories on its English-language page, including specialists in vehicle physics, racing systems, graphics programming and game development tools. These positions cover several areas fundamental to modern racing simulation, suggesting that Polyphony intends to continue refining the technology behind the franchise.

However, not all of these vacancies are necessarily new. Several job descriptions have existed for years, and the recruitment website does not specify how many employees will be hired for each position. The listings therefore provide insight into Polyphony’s technical priorities rather than confirmation of a particular development schedule.

Improving Vehicle Physics and Artificial Intelligence

One of the most revealing positions is Vehicle Simulation Programmer. According to the official description, successful candidates will work on improving the vehicle simulation engine used by Gran Turismo, including the reproduction of mechanical systems unique to individual cars.

The responsibilities specifically mention hybrid powertrains and active suspension systems, which require customized control logic to simulate their behaviour accurately. The role also involves refining vehicle dynamics and improving how cars respond to different input devices, including conventional controllers and racing steering wheels. Polyphony is looking for candidates with knowledge of mathematics, physics, automotive engineering and simulation development.

Artificial intelligence is another major area of recruitment. The Game AI Programmer position focuses on developing autonomous racing opponents capable of interpreting different circuit layouts, reacting to changing environments and selecting appropriate driving lines. Polyphony specifically identifies faster, more human-like driving behaviour as a development objective.

The position also involves machine-learning techniques, including deep learning, alongside difficulty balancing and driving assistance features. Although Gran Turismo Sophy is already being developed as an advanced racing AI, the recruitment description does not explicitly connect this vacancy to Sophy or confirm that its technology will be used in Gran Turismo 8.

Polyphony is also recruiting Racing Game Programmers to develop race regulations, competition systems and features for online lobbies and Sport Mode. These responsibilities include race event management, esports functionality and supporting tools. Separately, Online Engineers work on game servers, network communication and multiplayer services, while Game Engine Programmers develop underlying systems, including the simulation of physical phenomena.

Graphics Development and the Future of Gran Turismo 8

Beyond driving physics and AI, the studio is seeking Graphics Programmers with experience in real-time rendering, ray tracing, shader development and performance optimization. The job description emphasizes achieving high visual quality while maintaining efficient rendering, including research into advanced graphics technologies and material representation.

Other available positions include Sound Programmers, Technical Artists, CG Artists, UI Designers, Application Programmers, Build Engineers and Pipeline Tool Programmers. These roles cover vehicle and circuit modelling, sound processing, interface design, production tools and optimization. Polyphony’s GT Explore Studio is also recruiting for work involving partnerships with car manufacturers, motorsport organizations and other external companies.

Taken together, the advertised roles cover much of the technology required to develop and maintain a modern racing simulator. Improvements to vehicle physics, AI behaviour, rendering and online competition could benefit the existing Gran Turismo 7 or provide a foundation for future entries in the franchise.

That distinction is particularly important when discussing Gran Turismo 8. Although Kazunori Yamauchi previously acknowledged that the studio had begun work towards the next Gran Turismo project, Sony and Polyphony Digital have not announced a game under the Gran Turismo 8 name. No release date, supported platforms or finalized gameplay features have been confirmed.

Gran Turismo 7 also remains under active development. Its Spec IV update is being released in two parts during October and December 2026, introducing new cars, circuits, gameplay features and a further evolution of Gran Turismo Sophy. Continued recruitment could therefore support both the current simulator and the franchise’s longer-term development.

For now, the clearest conclusion from Polyphony’s recruitment listings is that the studio continues to invest in vehicle simulation, artificial intelligence, graphical technology and online systems. Whether these improvements will appear in Gran Turismo 7, its eventual successor or both remains unknown.
