Project Motor Racing: The End of the Ian Bell Era

Ian Bell’s departure as Chief Executive Officer of Straight4 Studios cannot be understood as a routine corporate reshuffle. In the context of Project Motor Racing, it marks the end of a period defined by extraordinary technological ambition, frequently grandiose communication, and a launch that exposed serious weaknesses in management, quality assurance, and community relations.

Kevin Boland, previously the studio’s Chief Development Officer, now takes over as CEO with an especially difficult task: stabilising a weakened company, rebuilding player confidence, and transforming a technically promising simulator into a coherent and sustainable product.

The change comes at a critical moment. Project Motor Racing launched in November 2025 under the weight of enormous expectations. Straight4 had presented it as the spiritual successor to GTR 2 and the early Project CARS titles, a simulation designed to restore the depth and authenticity that many players believed had been lost elsewhere in the genre.

The initial result fell far short of that promise. Performance issues, inconsistent physics, poor steering-wheel feedback, erratic artificial intelligence, and a generally unfinished experience led to a deeply negative reception. What was supposed to be the triumphant return of one of sim racing’s most experienced development teams instead became another example of a game released before it was ready.

Bell’s departure does not erase those problems, but it does change the structure from which Straight4 will attempt to solve them.

An Essential and Divisive Founder

Ian Bell has been one of the most influential and controversial figures in sim racing for more than two decades. His career is connected to some of the genre’s most important titles, including GTR, GT Legends, GTR 2, Need for Speed: Shift, and the Project CARS series.

Bell has always stood out for his ability to gather talent, mobilise communities, and turn seemingly unrealistic ideas into real projects. His career began in the modding scene, where he coordinated an international group of enthusiasts to develop GTR2002 using F1 2002 as its technical foundation. That initiative eventually led to the professionalisation of the team under the SimBin name.

Blimey! Games and Slightly Mad Studios followed, both built around many of the same developers, designers, and physics specialists. Bell demonstrated an exceptional ability to keep that core group together, even during severe financial crises.

When 10tacle Studios became insolvent and Blimey! Games was pushed towards collapse, Bell acquired the company’s assets and employment contracts to establish Slightly Mad Studios. Later, following the cancellation of a proposed third Need for Speed: Shift game, he once again framed the studio’s survival as a struggle against the power of major publishers.

That narrative of independence became one of the central pillars of his public identity. Bell was not simply a company executive. He positioned himself as a defender of creative talent against corporations, financial departments, and executive decisions disconnected from players.

The problem was that this visionary-founder role was accompanied by a management style that became increasingly difficult to sustain during production and consolidation.

The Cycle of Grand Promises

Projects led by Bell have often followed a recognisable pattern. First comes a powerful idea, presented as a technological revolution. Then developers, commercial partners, and enthusiastic supporters are brought together around that vision. Finally, once the product reaches the market, the expectations built around it collide with its practical limitations.

That happened with Project CARS 2. The game offered an extraordinary number of cars, circuits, racing disciplines, and weather conditions, but not all of that content reached the same level of quality. Some cars delivered an exceptional driving experience, while others suffered from inconsistent grip, tyre-temperature issues, or poor Force Feedback.

The community eventually created custom configurations to correct sensations that should have been addressed by the studio itself. The well-known files developed by Jack Spade became, for many players, an almost essential requirement.

Rather than systematically acknowledging those shortcomings, Bell frequently adopted a defensive stance. Criticism was often treated as hostility, technical problems were blamed on user hardware, and public communication could quickly become confrontational.

The situation worsened with Project CARS 3. In an attempt to reach a broader audience through a more accessible experience, the game removed features that the established community considered fundamental, including tyre wear, fuel consumption, and pit stops. It ended up trapped between two audiences: too far removed from simulation for long-term fans and lacking enough identity to compete convincingly as an arcade racer.

The failed Mad Box console project revealed another side of the same problem. Bell announced a system that would compete with PlayStation and Xbox, offer high-end PC performance, support virtual reality, and provide a free multiplatform engine to developers. The initiative collapsed within months due to a lack of funding, changes in the market, and intellectual-property complications.

The issue was never a lack of imagination or courage. It was the absence of sufficient planning, risk control, and realistic evaluation of available resources.

The Project Motor Racing Mistake

Straight4 Studios was created after Bell’s departure from Electronic Arts, where he had ended up following the successive acquisitions of Slightly Mad Studios by Codemasters and Codemasters by EA.

The new studio brought back numerous veterans and initially announced its next project under the name GTR Revival. It was later renamed Project Motor Racing, a title that directly evoked the legacy of Project CARS.

Once again, the ambition was immense. Straight4 promised advanced physics, an authentic driving experience, and a platform open to the community. Yet development became defined by an extremely risky technological decision: abandoning Unreal Engine 5 and moving the project to GIANTS Engine, the technology primarily associated with Farming Simulator.

The reasoning was understandable. Straight4 wanted stable performance, strong virtual-reality support, and accessible modding capabilities. However, the transition required the studio to integrate an entirely new physics system into a platform that had not originally been designed for high-precision motor-racing simulation.

That new system was called Hadron. It operated at 720 Hz, meaning that vehicle physics and tyre contact were calculated 720 times per second. On paper, the figure was impressive. But calculation frequency alone does not guarantee that a car will feel natural to the player. A physics model can be mathematically sophisticated and still communicate poorly through a steering wheel, controller, or display.

That is precisely what happened. The studio became focused on the theoretical sophistication of its internal systems while losing sight of the final user experience. Kevin Boland would later acknowledge that Straight4 had been operating inside an “echo chamber”, convinced of the quality of its numbers while ignoring obvious signals about how the game actually felt.

Only two days before launch, last-minute code changes severely damaged the Force Feedback. Instead of delaying the release, Straight4 kept the planned date. The result was a commercial build that could not meet the expectations the studio itself had created.

From Vision to Stabilisation

Kevin Boland’s promotion represents a shift in priorities. His public language is not centred on technological revolution or superiority over competitors. He speaks instead about clarity, structure, team support, listening to players, and building for the long term.

That difference matters. Straight4 no longer needs to prove that it can imagine the most ambitious racing simulator on the market. It needs to prove that it can repair the one it has already released. Boland knows the studio from within and has been involved in earlier Slightly Mad Studios projects. That continuity may prove valuable because he understands both the technical architecture and the organisational mistakes that led to the launch.

His appointment also coincides with a period of meaningful updates. The team has substantially revised GT3 and GT4 handling, begun work on native triple-screen support, introduced new vehicles, and changed the pre-race multiplayer experience. The apparent strategy is to fix the foundations first: physics, controls, user interface, stability, and competitive infrastructure. These are not especially glamorous improvements, but they are exactly the areas that determine whether a racing simulator survives.

Patch 2.0 had already suggested this change in philosophy. Straight4 redesigned menus, added clearer explanations for Force Feedback settings, revised grip-to-slip transitions, and introduced systems intended to improve online racing. The game still carries major problems, and the recovery is far from complete. Even so, the evolution of recent reviews suggests that some players are beginning to recognise an experience significantly better than the one released in November 2025.

The Importance of Aristotelis Vasilakos

The other decisive figure in this reconstruction is Aristotelis Vasilakos, Straight4’s new Chief Creative Officer.

His appointment gives the studio something it urgently needed: technical credibility. Vasilakos spent years at Kunos Simulazioni and was closely involved in the vehicle behaviour of Assetto Corsa and Assetto Corsa Competizione.

Beyond his mathematical and development background, he has built an unusually positive relationship with the sim-racing community. His communication style is educational, cautious, and transparent. Rather than presenting simulation as a contest of impressive figures, he tends to explain how tyres, suspension, weight transfer, and aerodynamics interact.

His role is not limited to refining the handling model. As Chief Creative Officer, he will also help define the full identity of Project Motor Racing: what kind of experience it should offer, how its career mode should develop, and how it can balance accessibility with uncompromising simulation.

The Boland–Vasilakos partnership represents a very different leadership model from Bell’s. One is focused on business structure and operational stability; the other on technical and creative consistency. Neither appears interested in promising immediate miracles.

A Future That Remains Uncertain

Ian Bell’s departure does not guarantee the recovery of Project Motor Racing. Straight4 still faces financial, technical, and legal risks. The launch damaged the game’s reputation, triggered staff cuts, and reduced the studio’s margin for error.

Competition is also intense. Players already have access to established simulators such as iRacing, Automobilista 2, Assetto Corsa Competizione, and Le Mans Ultimate, while closely following the development of Assetto Corsa EVO. Winning users back in that environment will require more than a series of modest patches.

Straight4 must deliver stability, attractive content, reliable online systems, and handling that works correctly across a wide range of hardware. It must also communicate regularly without falling back into exaggeration. Even so, the project still possesses valuable assets. It has experienced developers, a powerful technical foundation, relevant licences, and a community that remains interested in the possibility that the game may eventually fulfil part of its original promise.

Ian Bell was essential to the existence of Project Motor Racing. He financed its early stages, assembled the team, secured publishing agreements, and preserved a line of development that had been threatened following the cancellation of Project CARS 4. Ignoring that contribution would be unfair.

At the same time, it is difficult to separate his leadership from the decisions that led to the game’s troubled launch. The emphasis on promises, the constant expansion of scope, the reliance on risky technological solutions, and the resistance to criticism were all part of the same system.

Straight4 is now entering a less spectacular but potentially more important phase. The company no longer needs a founder capable of imagining the future. It needs managers and specialists capable of building, testing, and correcting it. The reconstruction of Project Motor Racing will not be decided by dramatic announcements or comparisons with its rivals. It will be decided through successive updates, tyre-model revisions, Force Feedback improvements, external testing, and cautious business decisions.

In sim racing, where every mistake is ultimately transmitted directly into the player’s hands, credibility cannot be imposed through rhetoric. It has to be earned, lap by lap and patch by patch.
