It might have been GTR2, or maybe Race 07 — I can’t quite remember. What I do remember, though, is that ever since then, that circuit left a mark on me: its winding tarmac, the elevation changes, and that African sun that always seemed to set just as I was nailing my qualifying lap.
For a developer to go out of their way to bring back tracks like Kyalami — far from the usual Spa, Monza, or Nürburgring — and weave them into a narrative built around soulful machines like the GT1 monsters, Group C legends, and screaming V12s… it truly takes us back to the golden sim racing era of the 2000s.
Yes, Kyalami is back, this time in the hands of Straight4 Studios. And, as has become their trademark, they’ve revealed it in breadcrumbs. No trailers, no gameplay — just two images.
Straight4’s silence is starting to sound louder than any engine roar. Where’s the gameplay? Today’s competition is fierce, and while we’re left squinting between the lines for hints, the world keeps turning. Other sims continue to grow, to evolve, to push forward.
So yes, maybe the wait is getting long. Maybe the glow of nostalgia doesn’t shine as brightly as it once did. But if Project Motor Racing manages — even for a fleeting moment — to reignite the magic we felt in GTR2 or Race 07, then we’ll be ready. We’ll put on the imaginary helmet, fire up the engine, and believe — once again — that the best sim is still ahead of us.
Only this time, with our feet a little more firmly on the ground.
Happy Racing!
