Review SRP GT-Pedals

I still remember a few years ago when the alternatives for getting quality hardware were to go to the top with a G25 and making handcraft modifications from there. In barely 10 years the range of choices opened up so much that perhaps the first ones to be surprised were the players and fans of the genre who were excited to see how an industry (not very big but very dedicated) was flourishing, allowing us to physically equal the sensations that the software managed to transmit to us through the screen.

This year the boom of anything that surrounds the gaming industry has gone far beyond the highest expectations and in particular in our country is satisfactory to see how many small companies are left without stock selling all the products they have available. Just as we did with others that were starting out, and this is more important today than ever, we are once again supporting all of them that sacrifice time and money to offer a quality alternative and a new product in an expanding market.

SRP is a small company that after several years of research and development with several prototypes has managed to realize an innovative and functional solution on the already exploited pedal market. If we currently find pedals based on springs, elastomers, shockers or hydraulics, SRP stands out from the rest by offering a piston-centered approach and making the most of electronic components widely known in the world.

It is a question of giving one more twist and to deepen in the capacity that these components offer us, since it is not necessary to forget that the pedals are the most important element of the cockpit and a correct calibration and fidelity to what we can find in the reality is worth its weight in gold.

Packaging and logistics

The pedals, unlike most options we find on the market, come with a fixed structure that makes them unnecessary to mount or anchor them individually. Here there are no optional trays, everything is included in a single, huge package that, in pursuit of the final finishing, is a gift for the eyes of the customers. The package is presented with the mission of impressing the customer as soon as it is opened, with a unique orange look (soon to be a classic of the brand), with pedals already mounted and being the necessary luggage for each simracer.

There are no unnecessary frills or superfluous protections, everything is where it belongs and includes both the tools for customization and instructions on how to make those little adjustments. In these times of caution we find the detail of the personalized mask.

The protective polyester does not release residue which is easier to know to get these big guys out of the box without messing your home. Small detail important for the rest of the inhabitants of the house.

Finishings and tray

The tray on which the pedals sit gives an absolute feeling of sturdiness, weight and excellent refinement. I’m not sure if it’s the brushing or the type of machining, but like the rest of the pieces, it’s something out of the ordinary that attracts at first sight. Live you can see certain shades of light that are impossible to recognize in pictures, things that make them stand out especially with the changes of sunlight. This may seem a nonsense because of the ultimate utility of the pedals, but it is an important point of purchase for some and of vital importance depending on where they have to be mounted.

The choice of orange gives a color tone to the usual monochrome range in which we live and that brings a touch of distinction to the whole. If we already notice that each plate is engraved with the letters SRP we will understand to what extent the materials have been taken care of in the development of the pedals.

Assembly and customization

If you have a tray with standard holes you are in luck, as the tray comes with a lot of holes in strategic positions that should facilitate the assembly. The minimum required is four fixing points, although it comes prepared for six and can be placed on any flat surface. If you have profiles, as I do, you will have to reposition the supports to create a straight profile that stably supports the tray before screwing. In my case I use M6 screws of 20mm conical head to cross the tray and reach the nut inside the profiles.

Once anchored and taking into account its weight of 8 kilos, there should be no problems of displacement of the base or unexpected movements. Make sure of this before continuing.

The pedals come prepared for even the most modest cockpits like Playseat using an add-on that allows three different positions, depending on whether we brake with the right or the left foot.

Configuration and customization

Once seated in the cockpit and having adjusted the distances to the pedals, we may need certain personal adjustments to find a comfort position that allows us to perform at our best. Since they are already pre-assembled and fixed to the tray, the possibilities of customizing the distance between the pedals are limited to the movement of the plates to any of the nine adjacent positions and the angles of the upper arms. It is not the same as moving the pedals freely but it should be enough for all the simracers. We also have the possibility of making the plates less inclined by about 20 degrees.

Brake and accelerator hardness and travel are also customizable, with fewer options for the clutch due to its complex physical configuration.

For those who do not use the clutch regularly, there is the possibility of disassembling it, moving the accelerator and brake to a position centered on the plate to be more comfortable.

Calibration and MySetup

The pedals are connected to the PC through an electronic box with different LED lights that indicate problems or operation of the set. It has a USB type C connection so it plugs through either of the two positions and is instantly recognized by Windows.

Once the pedals have been calibrated to your liking and set in your simulators, if we want to adjust any pedal while we are playing, we only have to tabulate without leaving the game, recalibrate them with the application and go out on track, since the new configuration is applied directly without having to recalibrate in the game. That is because when you calibrate the pedals with the application always gives you the maximum resolution, the 65535 steps, so I do not think anyone can have complaint in that aspect.

The application is evolving almost every month, so it is full of possibilities and calibrations. We stepped on the clutch and accelerator to the maximum to calibrate, and the brake as the manufacturer says, you have to step where you would like to have your maximum braking, ie the one you’re going to use while driving, if you do so you will always be using the maximum resolution of 65535 on each braking.

Soon you will get more additional settings.

Accelerator

One of the pedals that theoretically has less complications, since it almost always goes deep. Still you can seek to take it a step further and not simply using a spring, but in a real car the feeling is slightly different. That particular touch has been reflected this time with more fidelity thanks to the use of pistons and pneumatic cushioning that makes the backward movement more natural and the pressure is felt differently when pressing. This should allow us to modulate the acceleration more precisely, which we must remember is vital to achieve traction at certain points of the exit of the corner and that otherwise what it does is sliding and losing time. In my case it came with a long travel and a little harder than I’m used to, so I have softened and shortened it to be a little more comfortable.

Brake

The key point of every pedal set and on which it depends whether a product is interesting or not. In this case and fortunately, nothing has been left to improvisation. The many tests carried out and the previous prototypes have resulted in a brake pedal that maintains that unique feeling of competition brakes and quickly leads us to what are racing sensations. A short and soft course, even longer than expected, but incredibly precise and satisfactory until reaching a progressive curve of incredible hardness that is completed with a retreat similar to the accelerator; fast but not immediate and with a recognizable touch. Both through the application and physically it can be customized and softened or hardened at your convenience. After having tried it in its hardest configuration for a few minutes I can declare that it will certainly satisfy all those who seek to exert maximum pressure. For my part I have preferred to leave it in a more accessible configuration.

Clutch

A more linear pedal than we know of in products of this range, with two palpable stages but last one being very subtle, as the latter is at the end of the travel and perhaps too short for what is expected. It does not look like any of the other two, and in this case I am not sure if this is good or bad.

There is no problem to gear or modulate it on the outputs, so it fulfills its function with all the guarantees. I would like to see if the touch can be improved in future versions with some small modification.

Final conclusions

It took longer than expected to write this analysis because of several factors, most of them unrelated to simracing, but one of them is the nature of the pedals themselves. The fact is that they are something completely new, that until now I had only felt in a product already discontinued (TSS piston) of at least a five years ago. That good memory has manifested itself again with improvements and with impeccable refinements that I have never seen in a first batch of a new company, which suggests that I can only expect good things from SRP from this moment on.

An important detail for me has been to find again some pretty quiet pedals that have hardly any moving parts and that those with self-lubricating bushings. They don’t need any kind of maintenance and by the construction of the pedals I don’t expect to find residues of their use anywhere either.

The SRP-GT are located (at price level) in an intermediate step between the spring and dampers pedals but in my opinion they improve the feel of the spring pedals and equal (or improve, depending on taste) the feel of those that combine springs and dampers, which are usually higher than 1000 euros.

SRP has shown a top notch customer service and I am sure it will be known in no time, with spare parts sent in 24 hours or phone questions solved in a few hours, so I want to ensure the customer’s peace of mind in the event of a problem that might arise in a product like this.

The pedals set can be purchased directly through the Simracing-Pro store and are shipped worldwide.
