Sim Racing GPU Prices Are Rising: What Should You Buy?

Graphics card prices have risen sharply in the United States during the second half of 2026, making a new GPU considerably more expensive for sim racers than it was only a few months ago. Several NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Series cards have suffered particularly large increases, while AMD’s Radeon RX 9000 range has generally remained more competitive.

For sim racing, however, price and average gaming performance are only part of the equation: triple screens, ultrawide monitors, 4K and high-resolution VR can completely change which GPU makes the most sense.

The US GPU market changed significantly during the summer of 2026.

According to US retail price tracking, the median price of the RTX 5060 increased from around $370 in June to $470 in August. The RTX 5070 moved from approximately $660 to $900, while the 16 GB RTX 5060 Ti jumped from around $570 to more than $800.

That is particularly important for sim racers building new PCs, because many of the cards traditionally positioned as mainstream 1080p or 1440p options are now selling dangerously close to GPUs from the next performance tier.

AMD cards have also become more expensive, but the increases have generally been less severe, making the Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT increasingly attractive alternatives.

How Much Have NVIDIA GPU Prices Increased?

The percentage increase does not tell the whole story. The RTX 5090, for example, increased less dramatically during this specific period because it was already massively above its $1,999 launch MSRP.

Recent September US price tracking has found the cheapest available RTX 5090 at more than $5,000. For anyone buying primarily to race rather than perform professional GPU workloads, that makes the top Blackwell card extraordinarily difficult to justify.

These are market snapshots rather than fixed prices. Individual models, promotions and stock changes can move considerably from one day to another.

The important point is the relationship between the cards.

An RTX 5070 approaching $800 becomes difficult to recommend when an RX 9070 can be found around $650. Likewise, an RTX 5060 Ti 16 GB approaching $760 competes against considerably faster GPUs rather than conventional mid-range cards.

Why Sim Racing Needs a Different GPU Buying Guide

Normal gaming benchmarks usually assume one display at 1080p, 1440p or 4K.

Sim racing frequently does not.

A triple-1440p setup renders a combined 7680 x 1440 resolution, or more than 11 million pixels. That is actually more pixels than conventional 4K. VR presents a different challenge. The GPU has to render high-resolution views for both eyes while maintaining extremely consistent frame times. Average FPS therefore tells only part of the story.

Your simulator matters too. iRacing, Le Mans Ultimate, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Assetto Corsa EVO and Automobilista 2 do not place identical loads on the GPU or CPU.

A graphics card that is excessive for iRacing on one 1080p monitor might become completely reasonable when driving three 1440p monitors or a modern high-resolution VR headset.

These are purchasing targets rather than minimum requirements. Lower-end hardware can work perfectly well if settings and target frame rates are adjusted accordingly.

Is 8 GB of VRAM Enough for Sim Racing?

Eight gigabytes is not automatically obsolete.

iRacing still lists 8 GB of GPU memory within its recommended hardware specifications, while several current racing simulators can operate comfortably on 8 GB cards depending on resolution and graphical settings.

The question is whether buying a new 8 GB card at today’s prices makes sense. That is much harder to justify.

Sim racers commonly keep their GPU for several years and may later move from 1080p to 1440p, ultrawide, triple screens or VR. Higher resolutions increase memory requirements, particularly once high-resolution textures, mirrors, reflections and large fields are involved.

For a new system in 2026, 12 GB is a much more comfortable target and 16 GB is preferable for high-resolution or longer-term builds. That does not make every 16 GB card good value, however. The RTX 5060 Ti 16 GB is the perfect example: it solves the memory-capacity issue, but at approximately $750 it is competing with far faster hardware.

Best Budget GPU for Sim Racing

At the lower end, the most important advice may be to avoid overpaying.

An RTX 5050 around $300 can handle a conventional 1080p sim racing setup, but its value depends heavily on price. At $300 it is already above its original $249 MSRP.

The RTX 5060 is faster, but current prices around $450 make it difficult to recommend as an entry-level card. That leaves Intel’s Arc B580 12 GB as an interesting alternative around $300. Its 12 GB memory allocation is attractive at this price level, although Intel compatibility and performance can vary more between games than NVIDIA or AMD.

For a system primarily intended for iRacing, ACC or another specific simulator, check current benchmarks and known driver behaviour before choosing Intel.

Our budget recommendation: keep your existing GPU if it remains adequate. If you must buy now, compare the RTX 5050 and Arc B580 around the $300 level rather than stretching to an overpriced RTX 5060.

Best GPU for 1440p and Ultrawide Sim Racing

This is where AMD currently becomes particularly attractive.

The RX 9060 XT 16 GB around $470 provides enough memory for 1440p and represents a more balanced specification than an 8 GB RTX 5060 Ti at a similar price.

However, if your budget can reach approximately $650, the RX 9070 16 GB is arguably the current sweet spot. It offers substantially more performance, twice the VRAM of an RTX 5060 and enough headroom for 1440p high-refresh-rate racing, 3440 x 1440 ultrawide and lighter triple-screen configurations.

The competing RTX 5070 remains a very capable GPU, but current pricing around $800 makes the Radeon difficult to ignore.

Best GPU for 4K and Triple Screens

For a serious monitor-based sim rig, the RX 9070 XT currently offers one of the strongest combinations of performance, 16 GB VRAM and price.

Recent US tracking places it around $740, only modestly above the standard RX 9070. That additional GPU performance becomes useful with 4K, 5120 x 1440 super-ultrawide displays and triple-screen configurations. The RTX 5070 Ti is another strong performer and can be particularly relevant for iRacing users, but a recent US price around $1,150 creates a difference of roughly $400 compared with the RX 9070 XT.

For conventional monitor-based sim racing, that premium is difficult to justify purely through rasterization performance.

Why NVIDIA Still Matters for iRacing

AMD’s current price advantage does not automatically make Radeon the best choice for every sim racer.

iRacing has specific NVIDIA rendering optimizations that deserve consideration. With triple monitors, iRacing supports NVIDIA Simultaneous Multi-Projection when using three separate projections. iRacing states that enabling the feature on compatible NVIDIA hardware can provide a performance improvement.

VR is another important case. iRacing supports native Fixed and Dynamic Foveated Rendering through OpenXR on compatible RTX GPUs. The technology reduces rendering workload away from the driver’s main viewing area, which can be particularly useful with high-resolution headsets.

That means an iRacing-focused user running demanding triples or VR may reasonably choose an RTX card even if a Radeon provides better conventional FPS-per-dollar.

RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080: Expensive but Relevant for High-End Rigs

The RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080 make much more sense once the target becomes a premium sim racing setup rather than mainstream gaming. Both offer 16 GB of VRAM and enough performance for demanding high-resolution configurations.

The RTX 5070 Ti currently starts around $1,150, while recent RTX 5080 prices are closer to $1,580. That makes neither card particularly attractive from a value perspective, but the calculation can change for somebody running a high-resolution VR headset or triple 1440p monitors in iRacing.

At those resolutions, maintaining stable frame times may matter more than maximizing performance per dollar.

If you specifically want NVIDIA for a premium rig, the RTX 5070 Ti is the more sensible starting point. The RTX 5080 makes sense when the extra performance is genuinely required by the display configuration.

RTX 5090: Not a Sensible Sim Racing Purchase

The RTX 5090 is obviously the fastest option, but current US pricing has moved beyond $5,000 for available cards.

There are extreme VR and multi-monitor configurations capable of benefiting from its performance, but that does not make it good value.

The difference between an RTX 5080 and a $5,000 RTX 5090 could instead pay for a substantial cockpit, active pedals, direct-drive wheelbase, triple monitors or a premium VR headset.

Unless budget is irrelevant or the GPU will also be used for professional workloads, the RTX 5090 is almost impossible to recommend purely for sim racing.

Should You Upgrade Your GPU Right Now?

For many sim racers, the answer is no.

If your current card already delivers the frame rate and image quality required by your rig, today’s pricing provides little reason to upgrade simply because a newer generation exists.

This is particularly true for cards such as the RTX 5060, RTX 5060 Ti 16 GB and RTX 5070, whose current pricing has pushed them well beyond their original market positions.

AMD’s RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT currently offer the strongest value for many conventional monitor-based setups, while NVIDIA remains particularly relevant for demanding iRacing triple-screen and VR configurations because of its simulator-specific rendering features.

The important part is to buy for the rig you actually use.

A single 1440p monitor, triple 1440p setup and high-resolution VR headset are three completely different GPU workloads. The best graphics card for sim racing is therefore not simply the fastest card you can afford, but the card that provides the right performance for your display configuration without paying for capability you will never use.
