Sim Racing in 2026: Why Great Physics Are No Longer Enough

For decades, sim racing was built around a single obsession: reproducing the behaviour of a car as accurately as possible. A simulator’s quality was measured by its tyre model, its weight transfer, its suspension response, its aerodynamics and the fidelity of its force feedback. The more convincing the relationship between wheel, car and tarmac, the more prestige the product carried.

That criterion still matters. It is no longer sufficient. In 2026, good physics are the starting point, not a complete value proposition. The leading simulators have reached such a high level of technical competence that the deepest differences are no longer found only in how a tyre gives up grip, but in everything surrounding the act of driving: progression, consequences, competition, interface, artificial intelligence and the sense of belonging to an ecosystem.

The modern sim racer does not just want the car to behave believably. They need a reason to switch it on.

Physics as the price of entry

Technological progress has closed part of the distance that once separated the most advanced simulators from everything else. Specialist studios have long since mastered fixed time steps, force handling, inertia matrices, tyre deformation and the interaction between temperature, pressure and wear.

This does not mean every title offers the same level of realism. Substantial differences remain in how each engine represents the limit of adhesion, aerodynamic balance, chassis torsion or the transition between dry and wet running. But for a large share of the audience, several reference products already deliver driving that is plausible, coherent and communicative enough.

Beyond a certain threshold, physics improvements produce diminishing returns. A user can clearly feel when a car is artificial, unpredictable or excessively forgiving. Telling two advanced thermal degradation models apart, on the other hand, demands experience, specialised hardware and controlled test conditions, the kind of comparison we run when we review sim racing hardware and software.

The industry therefore faces a new reality. When several competitors satisfy the basic requirement of feeling right at the wheel, fidelity stops being an absolute differentiator. Success now depends on converting that simulation into an experience with objectives, tension and continuity.

Assetto Corsa Evo and the purpose gap

Assetto Corsa Evo is one of the clearest examples of this shift. Its main strength lies precisely in what has always defined the series: the driving. With road cars in particular, the Kunos Simulazioni title offers a level of detail, naturalness and connection that is hard to find elsewhere enough that readers have argued it sets a new physics standard.

It also brings obvious improvements over the first Assetto Corsa: dynamic weather, a full day-night cycle, a far stronger graphical presentation and increasingly competent VR support, reinforced by the VR overhaul and modded car support introduced in update 0.8. On purely technical grounds, there are solid arguments for its potential.

The problem sits off track.

Kunos originally presented the project as an evolution meant to move past the classic structure of picking a car, picking a circuit and driving. The pitch included progression, experience, an economy and an open world around the Nürburgring and the studio has since shown what that open world will actually look like. These were not decorative extras. They were the justification for the new format.

The subsequent decision to remove the economy and progression systems substantially altered the product’s identity. Without rewards, risks or cumulative decisions, an open world risks becoming a technically impressive but ludically empty stage.

Exploring a road can be appealing for a while. Discovering points of interest, driving aimlessly or meeting other users has value too. Long-term retention, however, requires deeper structure. Jobs, challenges, repair costs, vehicle ownership, customisation, reputation, events or penalties could turn free driving into a coherent gameplay loop.

Without those layers, magnificent road-car physics are underused. The player has an extraordinary machine and no sufficiently interesting context in which to use it.

The opposite risk: progressing badly

An absence of progression breeds apathy. Badly designed progression can be even more damaging. Forza Motorsport demonstrated this when it launched a system requiring players to accumulate experience with each individual car before unlocking components.The intention was to encourage a closer relationship between driver and vehicle. In practice, it restricted one of the central activities of virtual motorsport: experimenting.

Tuning works as a process of hypothesis and verification. You change tyres, suspension, aerodynamics or gearing, test the result and adjust again. Locking those parts behind hours of driving turned virtual engineering into a repetitive chore. Instead of rewarding mechanical knowledge, the system rewarded time invested.

The contradiction sharpened inside a campaign that constantly pushed players into new cars. By the time you had levelled a car enough to transform it, the championship was almost over. The investment was disconnected from overall progress. Turn 10 eventually acknowledged the issue and reversed the design in an official car progression update, removing the level restriction so that every performance part became available at Car Level 1, a change reflected in the official car upgrading documentation.

The lesson is fundamental: a metagame cannot be designed in isolation from the discipline it is meant to reinforce. Progression should expand freedom, not artificially delay it. A simulator needs consequences, but they must emerge from decisions about driving, competition or management not from arbitrary barriers inherited from other genres.

Automobilista 2 presents a different challenge. Its catalogue combines historic single-seaters, prototypes, touring cars and under-represented categories. Its dynamic weather, track evolution and driving feel make it one of the most immersive experiences available, as we found across content packs like the Le Mans & Endurance Pack.

Yet once the immediate gratification of sampling cars and circuits fades, many users struggle to build a personal trajectory. Custom championships allow you to organise competition, but they do not replace a persistent universe. That need for context explains the rise of community applications and mods introducing contracts, sponsors, budgets, agents, salaries and component wear. These tools do not alter the physics. They change the meaning of each race. Driving a historic single-seater in the rain is already a rewarding experience. Doing it knowing that a retirement could compromise next round’s budget adds tension, memory and consequence. The race stops being an isolated session and becomes a chapter in a story.

The community has effectively identified a shortcoming that affects many simulators: a sandbox can offer unlimited freedom and, at the same time, transmit a profound sense of emptiness.

iRacing: competition as the metagame

iRacing proves that a traditional campaign is not essential to generate progression. Its structure rests on two systems: skill-based classification and an evaluation of on-track behaviour.

A loss of control, an avoidable contact or an unexpected result carries effects beyond the session. You are not only competing to win an event. You are protecting a reputation, trying to climb a division and attempting to prove you can race in more demanding company which is why avoiding incidents becomes a skill in its own right, and why the question of what iRating really says about a driver never stops being argued.

That design explains much of the platform’s longevity. The tension does not come from the physics alone. It comes from risk. An advanced tyre model can accurately represent overheating during a chase. It is the possibility of losing points, licence or standing that makes the chase emotionally intense.

Gran Turismo 7 has adapted similar logic for a much wider audience. Its Sport mode combines driver rating and sportsmanship rating, while the single-player side leans on collecting, licences, missions and a credit economy. The breadth of that design lets one platform satisfy players with very different motivations.

Le Mans Ultimate and the value of access

Le Mans Ultimate confirms that a well-integrated competitive infrastructure can offset other limitations. Its offline offering remains limited and its content is shaped by the FIA World Endurance Championship licence. Even so, direct access to organised racing has allowed a competitive community to consolidate, as reflected in the skill-based multiplayer built into the game and in the v1.0 release that closed its Early Access phase.

The key is not simply having multiplayer. It is how you reach it. Entering, qualifying and racing must be a process that is understandable, fast and internal to the product.

For years, simulators with outstanding physics engines depended on external servers, portals, calendars or third-party applications. That fragmentation pushed users away before they ever reached the track. Le Mans Ultimate understood that the interface and matchmaking are components as important as the dynamic model and the studio is now extending that logic offline with the career mode arriving in v1.3. Assetto Corsa Evo still carries doubts in this area. Relying on external platforms to organise part of its competition breaks the continuity of the experience. A modern product cannot ask users to manually assemble the ecosystem the simulator itself should provide.

BeamNG.drive: when damage means something

BeamNG.drive owns one of the most impressive physics systems in the industry. Its soft-body simulation represents deformation, torsion and structural damage with a depth that is practically unmatched.

For a long time, that technology functioned mainly as a sandbox. Crashing, experimenting and watching destruction unfold had strong immediate appeal, but offered few reasons to sustain a save file for months.

The gradual introduction of an economy vehicle purchases, fuel, transport, insurance and repairs changed the player’s relationship with the damage system. A crash stopped being purely a visual spectacle. It acquired a cost.

This shift illustrates one of the central ideas of contemporary design: physics need consequences to reach their full potential. A deformed suspension arm matters far more when it forces a choice between repairing, replacing or continuing with a compromised car. Simulation becomes meaningful when it affects the player’s future.

From technical tools to sporting ecosystems

Modern simulators no longer compete solely to reproduce driving more accurately. They compete for their users’ time, attention and emotional investment.

Physics remain essential. A car that fails to communicate the limit, incoherent aerodynamics or an artificial response can destroy any experience. But once a solid technical base exists, the product has to answer different questions: what is at stake, what changes after a race, why should the player come back tomorrow, and what connects one session to the next?

The answers can take different shapes: a campaign, an economy, a persistent team, a licence system, a ranking, dynamic championships, mods, community events or an open world with real activities. There is no single valid model, but there is one common condition, driving has to sit inside a structure with purpose.

The future of sim racing will not be decided exclusively by whoever calculates internal tyre temperature most precisely. It will be decided by whoever integrates that precision into an experience that is accessible, coherent and durable.
