We are entering a new era for Direct Drive wheel bases. Many companies are about to unveil supposedly revolutionary new models after years of research and development. We know that many others are in the final stages and will soon add more options to the list, but one thing is clear: simracing continues to advance.
Simucube 3
Without a doubt, the most important upcoming release is the third generation from the Finnish brand Simucube. Those who have followed this blog from the beginning know our emotional ties to Granite Devices, the company behind the brand, and how everything started. From open-source software, an industrial component was transformed into one of the cornerstones of modern racing simulation. That led to Simucube and everything around it—a fast-paced story full of success.
This week, the third generation is being launched, although nothing beyond some teaser images of the new bases has leaked so far. We don’t really know what to expect, except perhaps features like “True Force” or “FullForce” software techniques, already being added by other brands. Let’s see what surprises they have in store.
Sim-Lab DDX
The company founded by Richard Schouteren, who we also know from the beginning, is entering a new era with the inclusion of Direct Drive bases in its product line. Some attendees at recent expos have already tried these DDX models, which promise forces at levels never seen before. It seems the intention is to make these motors so versatile that even the smallest details are reflected with precision—just what professionals seeking maximum fidelity want. And speaking of professionals, the most advanced model is clearly aimed at real-world drivers.
Moza Racing R21 and R25 Ultra
Moza Racing’s new wheel bases also represent a significant shift from their previous offerings. They finally move away from the appearance of their first models and evolve towards a more conventional format, while adding new features. We hope to test them soon and share our impressions.
Other brands
We can expect surprises at the SimRacing Expo, as many brands choose the German show to make their major announcements ahead of the holiday season. There will be continuous product launches, and some brands like TrakRacer are running behind schedule with their base projects. We’ll see if Fanatec (Corsair) releases anything new, and we’ll be watching closely for surprises from all the others.
