Verstappen and Canapino Shine on iRacing’s Daytona 24

daytona post 2024

The first special event of the year for iRacing has been a great success and they have shown all these facts in an official recap post.

iRacing, IMSA, and VCO are pleased to share the success of the 2024 iRacing Daytona 24 powered by VCO, the biggest sim racing event in the world and the first of four rounds in the 2024 VCO Grand Slam. Open to the entire iRacing service, this year’s event was the largest in history, with more than 18,500 competitors split across 95 concurrent race sessions that started at four different times on Friday and Saturday. In addition, more than 1.8 million viewers watched iRacing broadcasts of the event across Twitch and YouTube.

Over the past decade, the iRacing Daytona 24 has grown into the largest event in sim racing. The virtual version of the opening round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship sees GTP, LMP2, and GTD teams go twice around the clock on the weekend before their real-world counterparts do the same. iRacing’s matchmaking system splits all of the signups by their driver rating, creating dozens of concurrent races where everyone faces off with other sim racers of a similar skill level. This year marked the first edition of the race to feature the full IMSA GTP lineup, adding the Acura ARX-06, Cadillac V-Series.R, and Porsche 963 GTPs to the BMW M Hybrid V8 GTP that first competed in the event last year.

In the top split, real-world racing stars joined top sim racing pros on the top step of the podium. Reigning Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen was part of the winning GTD entry from Team Redline, while INDYCAR driver Agustin Canapino was a part of the Williams Esports GTP team that won the top split overall. For the victories, their teams will be granted automatic entries into the return of the IMSA Esports Global Championship later this year. Three more spots will be on the line for the top split GTP and GTD class winners in the iRacing Sebring 12 Hour, 6 Hours of the Glen, and Petit Le Mans Special Events later this year.
