Because let’s be honest, it’s not the same to race with 20 rivals on a massive track like Nürburgring or Le Mans, compared to being surrounded by 60, 80, or even more than 100 cars fighting for position.
The Standard and the Official Numbers
In titles like Automobilista 2 , the usual limit is around 48 cars. That’s enough for a big grid, yes, but when you enter a multiclass championship with five different categories, you end up competing against a relatively small number of direct rivals.
On the other hand, iRacing allows up to 60 cars, while in some technical configurations the number gets close to 64 (though part of those slots are reserved for a safety car or a ghost car).
Assetto Corsa Competizione can also handle grids larger than 50 cars, although it depends on private servers and the power of the hosting machine.
When We Talk About “Crazy” Numbers
If the goal is to go way beyond the 60-car barrier, then we enter more flexible territory:
- RaceRoom Racing Experience can reach up to 100 cars on track, although the real limit depends on the number of pit boxes available at each circuit.
- Assetto Corsa with track mods is the real gem for those who want to push the limits. There are modified circuits with 70, 100, and even more than 120 grid slots. Of course, diving into this world requires patience: editing files, testing setups, and above all, having a PC that won’t break a sweat calculating the physics of such a massive crowd.
The less glamorous side of all this is that the more cars you have on track, the heavier the load on your system. And it’s not just about graphics: AI, physics, and network synchronization (in online races) become a real challenge.
Trying to recreate, for example, a 24-hour endurance race with over 100 cars, multiple classes, and custom liveries may sound epic… but it also turns into a titanic project requiring time, quality mods, and powerful hardware.
Our Personal Conclusion
If what you’re looking for is realism without headaches, Automobilista 2 and iRacing are safe bets: clear limits, stability, and enough variety.
But if what you want is to dream big and push as far as your hardware can handle, Assetto Corsa Assetto Corsa with mods is the gateway to those massive grids of more than 100 cars. Just keep in mind: it’s not a simple “install and play,” but more of a project in itself.
In short: there’s no single answer.
It depends on how far you want to take your experience. Personally, I enjoy realistic grids of 50 to 60 cars that are well-balanced more than 120 rivals that turn every lap into chaos.
But of course… the temptation to try it at least once is always there.
