One of the latest circuits added to iRacing was Willow Springs. Gran Turismo 7 already featured it in some of its recent editions, and we saw it on the big screen in the fantastic Ford v Ferrari in the hands of Ken Miles. Now its current owners are putting it up for sale through Warren Buffet’s real estate agency.
Willow Springs International Raceway, located about an hour north of Los Angeles, is a 600-acre complex with seven tracks covering almost every motorsport discipline. Willow Springs is revered by thousands of racers and enjoyed by millions of spectators, which has helped it survive for over seventy years.
With its reputation as “the fastest road in the west,” Willow Springs is a historic pillar in American road racing. The history of Willow Springs Raceway is actually quite shallow compared to its future. With growth in the automotive and motorcycle industries, along with special interest in racing, Willow Springs International Raceway promises to play a significant role in the future of speed and safety. Michael Andretti still holds the track record set in March 1987 at 1:06:01. Everyone is waiting for the mighty 1-minute mark. A record ready to be broken by the next generation of racetrack owners.
Let’s remember that at Willow Springs, you can find these tracks:
- Big Willow: The main track at Willow Springs Raceway, informally known as “Big Willow,” consists of 9 turns. The layout is built for speed but also combines curves and elevations to offer a unique challenge.
- Horse Thief Mile: A small one-mile circuit with 11 turns and steep elevations surrounded by a desert landscape.
- The Streets of Willow Springs: Another small layout of nearly 3 kilometers with a testing space. Ideal for testing or tuning.
- Speedway Willow Springs: A quarter-mile oval with walls.
- Walt James Stadium: A 3/8-mile dirt oval with highly banked turns and no walls.
For now, the most well-known versions of this complex are found in Gran Turismo 7 if you want to check it out.
