WRC Returns to Nacon: Grit Games Leads the Official Rally Reboot for 2027

EA WRC 2023

The World Rally Championship is changing hands again in the world of video games, and this time the feeling is different. Nacon is not only reclaiming the official WRC licence, but also presenting a new development structure with a clear idea: start from scratch and build a completely renewed chapter.

After several years in which the official series went through different approaches, Nacon’s return marks a turning point. The licence will run from 2027 to 2032, coinciding precisely with a new regulatory era within the real championship. And, frankly, that does not seem like a coincidence: if there was ever an ideal moment to rethink the formula, this is it.

The new studio behind the project is called Grit Games, a name that fits the spirit of rally quite well: mud, tension, precision, and that feeling that every corner can change everything. The team will be led by people with prior experience in rally games, especially those coming from KT Racing. Among them are Hardouin Pouzet, Alexandre Assier, Laura Gayet, and Pierre-Nicolas Moreau, professionals who already know the weight of working with a licence as demanding as the WRC.

What is interesting here is not only who is at the helm, but the message that accompanies the announcement: this will not be a direct continuation of previous WRC titles. The intention is to build the project from the ground up, with a fresh vision and without necessarily carrying over the decisions of the past.

The 2027 WRC season will bring new regulations, and that opens an enormous opportunity for the video game. Rather than adapting an old foundation to a new reality, Grit Games will be able to design its product with that next chapter of the championship in mind from the very start.

From my point of view, this is the most promising aspect of the announcement. In rally games, authenticity does not depend solely on having official cars or recognisable stages. It depends on the car conveying weight, the terrain feeling alive, a late braking point having consequences, and every stage feeling like a small battle against the clock and against yourself. If Grit Games manages to capture that tension, Nacon could return with a much stronger proposition than expected.

The team was already present at Rally Monte Carlo to gather first-hand impressions and information. This detail may seem minor, but in a rally game it makes a real difference. The sound, the atmosphere, the accumulated dirt, the way cars behave on changing surfaces: everything adds up when the goal is a believable experience.

Furthermore, the fact that development began ahead of the announcement suggests this is not merely a statement of intent. There is already a working foundation in place and a defined direction.

See you on the track!
